A really good piece of kit

Review Date: January 18, 2007
Reviewer: Mrs S Kahn,
I was bought one of these for Christmas by my Mother in law last year (great I know!) and while I was slightly miffed, I did try it out. I feel the need to write a review because the product is actually brilliant! I have a young family of 4 as does one of the previous reviewers and it is perfect for that, and also perfect for cooking for 2. Maybe I haven't been as adventurous as the first reviewer with my recipes, but for everyday slow cooking it has absolutely been a one stop option for me. Everything seems to work well and fit properly and it is easy to clean etc, so it seems to do everything it says it is supposed to do and more as far as I'm concerned!
It's pretty good for entertaining

I bought this crock pot in about a year ago, and have used it several times. Granted, when the box arrived, I was surprised at how BIG the whole thing was - far too big for every day dinners for a young family of four. It has been fantastic for entertaining though.

After reading the accompanying literature, I had the same concerns as the previous reviewer. However, I have used many recipes form another crock pot book, and most of it has been pretty much one step. Throw every thing in, dinner ready at the end of the day.

The outer shell and lid get very warm during use. However all in all, a very useful piece of kit. Looks good and is to clean too. (Inner pot in dish washer.)

Crock pot doesn't seem to save time or energy

A crock pot is supposed to simplify cooking (by allowing one-step cooking) and save energy (using the principles of a hay box). This pot does not seem to do either of these.

The crock pot does not offer simple one-step cooking:
- Beans and pasta must be fully cooked before adding to the crock pot
- Meat and aubergines must be braised before adding to the crock pot
- Dairy products, ground herbs and spices cannot be added until the last hour of cooking
- The only thickening that can be used in a one-step process is tapioca. Thickening with flour requires a separate 15 minute process at the end of cooking (with the solids that were cooked in the pot having to be kept warm elsewhere...)
These cooking problems may also apply to other crock pots - I haven't tried to use one before.

It also seems unlikely that the crock pot gives enironmentally friendly energy saving, because the body round the heating element is so thin it can have little insulation and the lid has no insulation at all.

Lastly, the pot must be at least half full to work. So, if you buy a pot that it big enough for entertaining, it is too big for everyday use and vice versa.
